How Chiropractic Care Can Help With Whiplash

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Whiplash, herniated disc, spinal cord injury, and concussion are the most common injuries in car-related accidents. They range from mild, uncomfortable, or temporary problems to recurring, prolonged, and even very painful conditions.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help With Whiplash?

Chiropractic can reduce inflammation. The ligaments and muscles that make up the spine may be stretched or suffer micro-tears when a car crashes. The tissue damage caused by accident may cause inflammation in the area. In most cases, people in a car accident will not feel unwell immediately after the crash, but they can wake up the next morning until their neck is stiff and very painful. These two conditions are caused by the body's inflammatory response to these micro-lesions.

It can help restore movement. Inflammation can cause tissues to become immobile, which slows the healing of the injured area. Due to injury and inflammation, the spinal ligaments cannot get as much nutrition or blood supply as usual. Chiropractic adjustments can mobilize your spinal joints, which helps increase blood flow and the movement of therapeutic nutrients to that area.

Chiropractic care and whiplash rehabilitation

Your chiropractor will perform an initial examination to assess the extent of injury that may include X-rays. If it is determined that the injury is related to whipping, the chiropractor can initiate many treatments to restore the strength, function, and mobility of the affected area.

Your chiropractor will be able to adopt a treatment plan that will relieve pain and restore strength to the injured area and show you how to exercise and stretch to help the healing process.

Fortunately, most whippers have fully recovered with time, many of them recovered within a few weeks. However, some patients may experience symptoms for a longer period. Your age, gender, and current physical condition can significantly impact the severity and duration of symptoms.

The good news is that research shows that chiropractic has become a very effective treatment for whiplash.

Prevent whipping injuries

There are steps you can take to minimize the risk of whipping. Whenever you operate the vehicle, always make sure that your seat is in an upright position, the seat headrest is in the correct position, and you wear your seat belt correctly every time you ride in the vehicle.

If you participate in sports, especially contact sports, make sure you wear the right and appropriate equipment.

If you or someone you know has been whipped or is suffering from neck or upper back pain, then please know that chiropractic treatment is more than just making the pain go away. This is about helping you truly recover from your injury so that you can enjoy a normal and active life again.

What to expect when visiting a chiropractor?

When you visit a chiropractor for the first time, they will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, diet, how much sleep you get, how much exercise and how stressful you are. All this information will help the doctor understand you better and propose a suitable treatment plan for you.

Chiropractors provide you with a variety of whiplash treatment options that can help you relieve pain. They will check you and decide which method to take. They may perform spinal manipulations, which will begin to bring your spine back to normal alignment.
